Rauner blasts state lawmakers’ budget

SPRINGFIELD (AP) – Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Rauner says the spending plan approved by state lawmakers is a “phony budget.”

Illinois Legislators approved a plan on Friday that Democrats acknowledge puts off tough decisions about whether to slash spending or find new sources of revenue. That includes possibly making Illinois’ temporary tax increase permanent.

The vote on the $35.7 billion spending plan comes as the Legislature faces a Saturday deadline to adjourn.

In a statement, Rauner says lawmakers didn’t address structural reforms, instead passing a “broken, dishonest budget that career politicians” have been passing for years.

Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn is seeking a second full term in November.
