U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos on Friday said the resignation by Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinsheki was "appropriate," but "will not itself solve the systemic problems within the VA."

Bustos, D-East Moline, said in a news release that new leadership is a necessary step for the agency, which has come under intense scrutiny over the past month, following allegations that 40 patients died while awaiting care at a Phoenix hospital where employees kept a secret waiting list to cover up delays.

“As investigations continue, we must ensure that all those found negligent in the care of our veterans, criminal or otherwise, are held accountable," Bustos said.

"Our veterans deserve no less than the very best care, and I remain committed to working with Democrats and Republicans to ensure that no veteran gets left behind when they come home.”

Bustos represents the 17th Congressional District, which includes Whiteside and Carroll counties.
