ROCK FALLS – Robert L. Unterzuber, 85, of Rock Falls, died Friday, May 23, 2014, the result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Robert was born Oct. 26, 1928, in Freeport, the son of LeRoy and Helen (Shipman) Unterzuber. He was a graduate of Sterling High School, where he was inducted into the athletic hall of fame, and played on the 1945 state football team. He married Marilyn Kathleen Vary on March 7, 1948, in Sterling.
Robert worked as a foreman at Lawrence Bros. Co. for 43 years, retiring in 1990. He owned and operated a janitorial service for many years. Robert was an avid St. Louis Cardinals and Green Bay Packers fan. He enjoyed camping, fishing, coin collecting, and bowling. He was a member of Sterling Moose Lodge 726. Robert was known as a hard worker and kindhearted man who always put his family first.
Survivors include his wife, Marilyn, of 66 years; his daughters, Susan (Robert “Bob”) Foss of Sterling, Gail (Estel) Keefer of Rock Falls, Karen (Larry) Mewhirter of Rock Falls, and Annette Halliday of Sterling; his grandchildren, Jared Mewhirter of Rock Falls, Sonya Keefer of Rock Falls, Estel Jr. (Maryann) Keefer of Rock Falls, and Kathleen (Chris) Mixen of Sterling; his great-grandchildren, Cameron Keefer, Dallas Collin, Austin Collin, Jennifer Collin, Hayley Keefer, and Darshawn Keefer; and his great-great-grandchildren, MaKayla Keefer and Micky Keefer.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Bruce Unterzuber.
Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at McDonald Funeral Home in Rock Falls. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, with the Rev. William Sullivan officiating. Burial will be at Oak Knoll Memorial Park in Sterling.
