Rock Falls' Kara Nehrkorn slides safely back to first base while Mendota's Malorie Defore tries to tag Nerhkorn.

A big day of baseball and softball postseason play was scheduled for Wednesday, but Mother Nature had other plans.

Storms swept into the area about 5 p.m. postponing games in Rock Falls, Sterling and Morrison.

In Rock Falls, the 3A softball semifinal between the host Rockets and the Mendota Trojans had played on scoreless inning when lightning caused a delay. Rock Falls starter Michaela Ward had struck out two of the three batters she had faced.

Lightning flashed between innings, and after a 45-minute delay and a lot rain, the game was postponed. It will resume at 4 p.m. today in the top of the second inning.

Across the river in Sterling, the Rockets baseball team led Sterling 3-1 in the third inning. Dustin Huycke had the big hit so far with a two-run triple in the second.

That game will also resume at 4 p.m. today. Freeport and Rochelle will play after.

Morrison planned to have a pair of 2A sectional games starting at 5 p.m. with Byron vs. Erie-Prophetstown. The second game was Warren-Stockton vs. Aurora Christian.

Rain hit earlier in Morrison before any of the action started, and both games were postponed to today for 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Rock Falls is considering a ban on leaf burning. Should the city finally take that step?
Yes. Sterling and Dixon have had bans for years. It’s time for Rock Falls to impose a ban.
No. It would be too great a burden for homeowners to dispose of fallen leaves in other ways.
