STERLING – The U.S. Postal Service has issued a warning about an email scam that targets its customers.
The email, which claims to be from the postal service and even includes the agency’s logo, contains fraudulent information about an unsuccessful attempted package delivery.
The email asks recipients to click on a link to find out when they can expect delivery. Postal service officials stress that opening any links or attachments in the email can trigger a program that can steal personal information, including user names, passwords, and financial information.
“We want to keep our customers safe, so don’t open this email,” Sterling Postmaster Jo Bittinger said.
Anyone who receives this email should delete the message without opening it.
The post office doesn’t send emails of this nature, so there is no risk of deleting a legitimate notification.
“We leave notices on customers’ doors or in mailboxes,” Bittinger said.
This scam is not a new one, but it has recently resurfaced, and it is generating high phone call volume from the public, the postal service says.
“The last couple years, we’ve seen this scam here or there, but people have been calling us for weeks about this email,” Bittinger said. “We had six calls before noon today.”
The postal service suggests customers be aware of some general signals of scam emails:
• The text contains poor grammar or spelling errors.
• The text warns that there are dire consequences to not taking immediate action.
• Personal information is requested under the guise of confirming information.
• The text from an “automated message system” tells recipients to click on a link for details.
The U.S. Postal Inspection Service says it is working to disable the program.
