STERLING – Open burning is banned within Sterling city limits.

Community Services Department staff issued a reminder Thursday about when recreational fires can take place. Such fires are allowed in an enclosed vessel, fire pit or fireplace like a chiminea or screened commercial fire pits. Vessels must have, and use, a spark screen.

No garbage or yard wastes can be burned. Fires must be surpervised at all times, and no fires are allowed if the wind speed is faster than 10 mph. Fires must be extinguished if a neighbor files a complaint.

For more information, call Community Services at 815-632-6657.
