FULTON – Bernard J. “Bernie” Engelkins, 88, of Fulton, died Saturday, May 24, 2014, at Mercy Medical Center North in Clinton, Iowa. He worked for various area concrete contractors and the International Union of Cement Finishers Local 15 in Clinton,

He was born Aug. 11, 1925, in Fulton, to Burnie O. and Nellie (Shipma) Engelkens. He married Dorothy M. Geerts on Aug. 31, 1946, in Clinton, Iowa. She died Dec. 8, 2005. Bernie was a Navy veteran who served during World War II. He was a member of First Christian Reformed Church in Fulton.

Survivors include one daughter, Vicki Steward of Clinton, Iowa; two sons, Jerry (Diane) Engelkins of Morrison and Steve (Alice) Engelkins of Savanna; 10 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.

He also was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Ricky Engelkins; sisters, Carrie Wiersema, Elizabeth Rus, Nellie Port, Estella Dyson, and Lois Spangler; and brothers, John, Arthur and Edward Engelkens.

The funeral is at 1:30 p.m. today at the funeral home, with the Rev. Philip Stel, pastor of First Christian Reformed Church, officiating. Interment will be at Fulton Township Cemetery in Fulton.

Memorials may be made to the Lions of Illinois Foundation for Vision Impaired.
