Amboy motorcyclist dies in crash with Kreider vehicle

AMBOY – A motorcyclist killed when he collided with a Kreider Services van Saturday afternoon at the intersection of Inlet Road and U.S. Route 52 near Sublette was identified Sunday as 34-year-old Deryle A. “D.J.” Nickel of Amboy.

His passenger, who was seriously injured, has not yet been identified; she still was in a Rockford hospital Sunday afternoon, Lee County Sheriff John Varga said.

According to a release from the Sheriff’s Department and to Varga, the motorcycle was eastbound on 52 around 2:20 p.m. when it struck the side of the van, which was southbound on Inlet Road with nine occupants.

The traffic on Inlet has a stop sign. The traffic on Route 52 does not.

The force of the crash tipped the van on its side, Varga confirmed. No other details were available, in part because of the holiday weekend. More information will be released today, Varga said.

Nickel was pronounced dead at Mendota Community Hospital. The van’s passengers were treated and released from area hospitals.

Among others, Nickel is survived by his parents, Deryle and Judy Nickel of Amboy, a sister, Francine Sichta of Joliet, a brother, Hank Nickel of Amboy, and three children.

Funeral arrangements are pending at Mihm-Jones Funeral Home in Amboy.
