Boys tennis season comes to close

The local boys tennis season came to an end Friday at the Rock Island Sectional, as the Dixon, Newman and Sterling singles players and doubles teams were knocked out on Day 1.

After both received first-round byes, Sterling's Jack Nitz beat Dixon's Zach Healy 6-4, 6-0 in the first match for both in the singles division. Nitz then fell 6-2, 6-1 to Geneseo's Conner Vandersnick in the quarterfinals.

Dixon's Sam Bratt and Newman's Brady Reuter lost their first contested match after securing byes. Sterling's Lane Martells won his opening-round match before falling in the second round, while Newman's Connor Knack lost his first-round match.

In the doubles portion of the meet, Sterling's Dustin Stoudt and Zak Khan won their first match after a first-round bye, but lost 6-1, 6-0 to Moline in the quarterfinals.

Sterling's other duo of Alex Soriano and Jacob Reynolds lost in the first round, as did Dixon's John Brechon and Keenan Longan, while Newman's J.P. Neisewander and Andrew Schmitt won a first-round match before falling in the second round.

Newman's Noah Leffelman and Drew Burger lost their first match after a first-round bye, as did Dixon's Bryce Stanley and Michael Gale.
