Library stretches out to YMCA

Published: Saturday, June 7, 2014 1:15 a.m. CST

STERLING – During the summer, children enrolled in day care programs do not have an opportunity to participate in summer reading at the library.

This year, children enrolled in the Sterling-Rock Falls Family YMCA day care program will be able to take part at the Y.

With a $5,000 Library Services and Technology Grant from the Illinois State Library, the children will have a program with a science and math theme. The grant has allowed the library to upgrade these materials in its children’s and young adults’ departments. The upgrades will be checked out in bulk to the YMCA for use from July 7 to Aug. 1.

Students will have a reading goal and a weekly hands-on program. The library will reward medals books to those who reach their goal.

Rock Falls is considering a ban on leaf burning. Should the city finally take that step?
Yes. Sterling and Dixon have had bans for years. It’s time for Rock Falls to impose a ban.
No. It would be too great a burden for homeowners to dispose of fallen leaves in other ways.
