GIRLS BASKETBALL

H-F brings back hoops coach

Homewood-Flossmoor girls basketball coach Tony Smith’s contract has been renewed after a season of success on the court and controversy that spilled into the courts.

Smith led the Vikings to a 20-2 record in his first season at H-F after winning four state titles in 12 years at Bolingbrook High School, but he stirred controversy when six girls who played on his elite summer league club team transferred into the H-F district.

NFL

Bears considered artificial turf

Former Chicago Bears general manager Jerry Angelo believes the team was “around the corner” from a move to artificial turf at Soldier Field before he was fired after the 2011 season.

The natural-grass surface at Soldier Field has been criticized for years. The field regularly has ranked near the bottom of the league in NFLPA surveys, and the Bears were forced to cancel a training-camp practice at the stadium in 2011 because officials deemed the sod potentially dangerous.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

Weis still collecting from Notre Dame

In 2012, Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly led the Irish to the BCS National Championship game. But that year, the school was doling out more money to the coach Kelly replaced.

Charlie Weis, now the coach at Kansas, earned $2,054,744 from Notre Dame as part of the coach’s buyout extending from his firing in 2009.

Meanwhile, Kelly earned $1,457,284 in 2012, according to federal tax documents the school provided the Chicago Tribune.

Weis’ buyout figure could approach $19 million when all is said and done.

GOLF

Only a few days after sending out wedding invitations, golfer Rory McIlroy broke off his engagement to tennis player Caroline Wozniacki on Wednesday.

The 25-year-old McIlroy and 23-year-old Wozniacki have been dating since 2011. They were engaged on New Year’s Eve.
