Cards come up big in clutch

Season ends for Milledgeville, Eastland, Forreston-Polo

The Forreston-Polo Cardinals exploded for 11 runs over the final two innings Wednesday, rallying from a two-run deficit after five innings for a 12-3 victory over the Byron Tigers in a Class 2A Stillman Valley Regional semifinal.

Paige Peterson had three hits, while Abby Peterson, Olivia Peterson, Alex Sterenberg and Rebekah Wilken added two hits apiece for the third-seeded Cardinals (16-11). Olivia Peterson tripled, while sister Abby Peterson gave up one earned run and four hits in a complete-game win, striking out six and walking four.

Megan Bursell went the distance in the circle for second-seeded Byron.

Streator 7, Dixon 1: Erin Smith had two hits, including a double, and drove in a run for the Duchesses in a loss to the visiting Bulldogs.

Beccah Jones took the loss, allowing seven runs (five earned), nine hits and four walks in seven innings. She also struck out three.

Shelby Schmitz and Airiana McKinley each drove in two runs for Streator. Mollie Benner was the winning pitcher.

Baseball

Moline 11, Sterling 0, 5 inn.: Brady Siegmund had two of the Golden Warriors’ four hits in a road loss to the Maroons.

Rafael Sosa added a double for Sterling. Keegan Wellman took the loss.

Geneseo 6, Rock Falls 2: Cayden Erickson and Dustin Huycke drove in runs for the Rockets (18-10) at Geneseo. Erickson was the losing pitcher.

1A Fulton Regional

Fulton 13, Milledgeville 3: Paul Velasco went 4-for-4 with five RBIs, and Ethan Jones struck out 13 in a three-hitter to lead the host Steamers to a semifinal victory.

Indian Creek 12, Eastland 1: Chris Pickwell had two hits and three RBIs, and he also got the win on the mound as the Timberwolves ended the Cougars’ season in the regional semis.

2A Warren Regional

Winnebago 5, Forreston-Polo 2, 8 inn.: The Cardinals’ season came to an end in the semifinals in Warren, as the Indians scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning.
