MORRISON – Albert L. “Al” Benedict Jr., 92, of Morrison, died Monday, May 19, 2014, at Morrison Community Hospital.

Al was born Oct. 12, 1921, in Morrison, the son of Mary (Popkin) and Albert Benedict Sr. He attended Morrison grade schools, and later graduated from high school in Wisconsin. Al served in the Marine Corps from 1941 to 1945. He married Arlene M. Montgomery in Morrison.

Al started working for the U.S. Postal Service, and for many years had a rural route. He served on the Illinois Rural Letter Carriers State Board, and later as the secretary. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Morrison, where he served as treasurer. He always was ready to volunteer when help was needed. He was a member of the Morrison American Legion, and served as an officer on the board. He also was a member of Morrison Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Morrison Masonic Lodge. Al enjoyed playing cards, and still was bowling at 91.

Survivors include his wife, Arlene; one granddaughter, Alison (Jon) Manternach of Virginia; and two great-grandsons, Luke and Mark Manternach.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Nancy; and one son, David.

Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Friday and the funeral at 11 a.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church in Morrison, with the Rev. Michael Selburg, pastor, officiating. Interment will be at Grove Hill Cemetery in Morrison. Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home in Morrison is handling arrangements.
