DIXON – William Richard “Bill” Sharp, 72, of Dixon, died Friday, May 16, 2014, at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford. He was a carpenter for more than 50 years, retiring from Union Local 790 in 2003.
William was born Aug. 21, 1941, in Dixon, the son of Leslie and Mary Kathryn “Katie” (Keller) Sharp. He married Arletta Swartz on Jan. 13, 1996, in Oregon. Bill was in the Army and served as a military police officer at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. In his later years, he had many enjoyable moments having coffee and breakfast with his friends at River’s Edge in Dixon. Bill enjoyed woodworking and restoring cars. He was one of the first residents to build and occupy a home in Lost Nation, and built the signs at the East and West entrances. Bill was a lover of dogs and had a special place in his heart for his beagle, Buddy.
Survivors include his wife, Arletta Sharp of Dixon; two sons, Cory (Lory) Sharp of Harmon and Dennis (Tracy) Sharp of Dixon; his mother, Katie Sharp of Dixon; one sister, Susan (Kenneth) Buccola of Dixon; one stepson, Daniel Brown of Minnesota; two grandsons, Tyler Sharp of Rockford and Blayke Sharp of Dixon; three stepgrandsons, Trenton Sproul of Sterling, Matthew Gabbard of Rockford, and Lelind Brown of Beloit, Wisconsin; two step-great-grandchildren, Daymein Ellis of Sublette and Victoria “Tori” Sproul of Sterling; one niece, Lisa (Rob) Blackburn of Dixon; and one nephew, Todd (Claudette) Buccola of North Aurora.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Preston-Schilling Funeral Home in Dixon. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Ken Wasilewski officiating. Cremation rites will be accorded.
A memorial has been established to Granny Rose Animal Shelter.
