Elgin program gives babies library cards

Published: Tuesday, May 20, 2014 1:15 a.m. CST

ELGIN (AP) – Babies in Elgin are getting their library cards at just a day old.

The new program involves Advocate Sherman Hospital, Gail Borden Public Library and other community and health care groups. The Daily Herald reports the goal is to promote literacy and early reading.

All newborns at the Elgin hospital will get a library card if they live in the Gail Borden district. Officials say the idea started last year when they were trying to raise participation in the library’s summer reading program.

The program includes inviting parents to a “Baby’s First Library Visit.”
