Warriors clinch title

Sterling softball wins NIB-12 West for 5th straight year

Karlie Mellott and Shannon Long both hit home runs, and the Sterling Golden Warriors clinched at least a share of the NIB-12 West title for the fifth consecutive season with a 12-2 road win in five innings over Streator.

Long had three hits, including a home run and a triple, and she had two RBIs. Mellott had four hits and drove in three runs for Sterling (19-7, 9-1). Lexy Staples pitched four scoreless innings for the win.

Rock Falls 3, Winnebago 2, 8 inn.: Julie Dodd singled in Paige Reynolds in the bottom of the eighth to give the Rockets a Big Northern West home win.

Dodd pitched the first seven innings, allowing two earned runs and six hits. She had four strikeouts and one walk. Michaela Ward pitched a scoreless eighth for the win for Rock Falls
(18-7, 8-2).

Destinee Schumaker and Kaylyn Booker also drove in runs for the Rockets.

Moline 5, Morrison 3: The Maroons scored five runs in the first inning, and the Fillies could not make up the difference in a nonconference loss in Moline.

Allie Wiersema, Brooke Stralow and Jaeden Workman each drove in runs during a three-run fifth inning for Morrison (2-13). Workman also had a double. Wiersema took the loss.

Amboy 4, Serena 1, 5 inn.: The Clippers scored three runs in the top of the fifth in a game shortened because of rain.

Destinee Oenes earned the win, allowing four hits, one run, while striking out two and walking two. Madeline Ely had three hits for Amboy (16-9), including a triple, and she drove in a run. Kelsie Thurman also tripled for the Clippers.

Jaclyn Thompson took the loss for Serena.


Streator 7, Dixon 2: An error early in the sixth inning opened the door for six runs for the Streator Bulldogs, as they beat the visiting Dukes.

Mitchell Wolfe pitched six innings, allowing one earned run and seven hits. He also struck out one and walked two for the Dukes (7-18-1, 1-13-1 NIB-12 West).

Ryan Dixon and Connor Sperling each had doubles for Dixon, and Angelo Valdes and Cal Jarrett each drove in a run.

Trevor Austin had nine strikeouts and no walks on the mound for Streator.
