Q&A with Newman's Noah Leffelman

Newman junior moves from pads, to singlet, to shorts

Newman junior tennis player Noah Leffelman.

Comets’ No. 2 doubles player also wrestles and plays football

How long have you been playing tennis?

I started my freshman year, so this is my third year playing.

Your younger brother,
Eli, is also on the team.
How has that been?

He loves basketball. It’s one of his favorite things, and he wanted to keep playing in the spring, but I was able to talk him into just trying tennis his freshman year, and he is doing really well and playing on varsity. He is contributing a lot for a freshman.

Do you think being
the older brother helped influence him to play?

We’ve always done the same sports growing up, whether it be basketball or football, so tennis was just kind of the next thing in line. We’ve always been competitive, just acting like brothers.

What other activities are you involved with?

Well, I play football, and I do wrestling in the winter.

Still enjoying that
state title from football?

Yeah, I love football; I played left tackle. We had a really great year, but I’m just trying to make the most of my high school years and get involved in as many things as I can while I have this opportunity.

Those two sports seem very different, definitely more physical than tennis. What sparked an interest in tennis?

I do football in the fall and wrestling in the winter, and tennis was just kind of a spur-of-the-moment thing I decided to do my freshman year. I’ve just really enjoyed relaxing, and its not such a demanding sport on my body. I’ve always just really enjoyed going out there and playing. It’s just so different than football and wrestling, which are physically dominant sports. I just really enjoy the mental aspect of tennis.

Any similarities between
tennis and football/wrestling?

Some of the plays in football they will have the guards pulling, and in wrestling it’s important to understand where your feet are at all times and have to have good footwork. So those two definitely correlate with the agility and quickness required to play tennis.

Favorite meal?

Yes, Chicken Cordon Bleu. It’s my favorite. That, and corn.

Does someone make your Chicken Cordon Bleu, or do you have a favorite place you find it?

My mother gets it, and I eat that as much as I can. It’s always been my favorite.

Favorite music?

I love country music. Luke Bryan, specifically, and Jason Aldean. Sometimes I’ll listen to it before football, because that is when I really try to get myself jacked up. Not necessarily before tennis, though.

Is there anything on your music player that might
surprise the people who know you best?

I can’t really think of anything. I just have a lot of country music. Oh, I do have Amazing Grace on there, and for some reason that gets me in the zone.
