LADY LAKE, Fla. – Paul Eugene “Gene” Landis, 87, of Lady Lake, formerly of Sterling, passed away Thursday, May 15, 2014, surrounded by his wife, Demaris “Dee” and children, at Cornerstone Hospice of The Villages, Florida.

He was born Jan. 5, 1927, the son of Paul and Caroline (Hall) Landis, in Sterling, where he lived the majority of his life. He and his wife, Dee of 40 years, moved permanently to 405 Sundance Way, Lady Lake, FL 32159 in 2010.

Gene was a Navy veteran of both World War II and the Korean War. He served aboard the USS Whitehurst DE-634 and two other Navy ships. He was very proud to have served his country. He definitely had many “sea stories.” After serving in the Navy, he was employed by Northwestern Steel and Wire Co., retiring in 1990, after 36 years.

Gene is survived by his wife, Demaris Huckaba Landis; three sons, Doug (Chris) of Sterling, Greg of Tampa, Florida, and Jimmy of St. Cloud, Florida; one daughter, Julie Landis (Ken) Ecker of Springville, Indiana;, one stepdaughter, Kerina (Mark) Anselmo; one stepson, Tommy Denham; 12 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his mother; father; sister, Norma Whitver; and son, Scott.

Military funeral honors will be accorded at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida, Gene’s final resting place.
