Clinton stage set for summer season

CLINTON, Iowa – The Clinton Area Showboat Theatre has opened the box office for the summer season.

Hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. The box office is located at 303 Riverview Drive. Contact the office at 563-242-6760 or  boxoffice@clintonshowboat.org.

Local auditions will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday for munchkins to perform in “The Wizard of Oz” at the theater. Those auditioning will need to sing a song, which can be from any musical.

In order to particpate in the production, those interested must be available for rehearsal beginning June 20, during the possible rehearsal hours of 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Munchkins may be of any age, as long as they are no taller than 5 feet. The show runs July 3-20.

Two Showboat theater summer camps also are available. Classes are available for students entering first through eighth grade. Campers work directly with professional company members to develop a show of their own to be performed on the historic Showboat stage.

The first, “Camp Oz,” will be 9 a.m. to noon Mondays through Fridays from July 7-18. Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. July 18, and 2 and 4 p.m. July 19. Cost for the camp is $85.

The second, “Camp Wonderland,” will be 9 a.m. to noon weekdays August 4-13. Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 15, and 2 and 4 p.m. Aug. 16. Cost for the camp is $75.

The Taffetas will open Showboat’s 2014 season from June 5-15. A doo-wop group of four sisters perform such hits of the ‘50s as “Mr. Sandman” and “Lollipop.”

Irving Berlin’s “Annie Get Your Gun” will run from June 19-29. 

Two sisters leave their small Ohio hometown to chase their dreams in New York City in the Leonard Bernstein musical “Wonderful Town,” which will run from July 24 to Aug. 2. 

The final show of the 2014 season is the stage adaptation of the Lewis Carroll classic “Alice in Wonderland.”  Characters such as the Cheshire Cat and Mad Hatter will come to life on the Showboat stage from August 8-17.

Theatre for Children will again be performed at noon Saturdays on the Showboat. These programs provide an opportunity to introduce children to the world of live theater.

Opening Follies will showcase the 2014 Showboat cast of performers at 7:30 p.m. June 11. The second show will be held at 7:30 p.m. June 29, and will reveal details of the 2015 season.
