Led by brothers Brian and Brad Cavanaugh, the Polo-Forreston Marcos edged Newman by 3˝ points to win the Milledgeville Invite on Friday at Floyd Daub Field.
The Marcos finished with 143.5 points. Newman was second at 140, followed by Milledgeville-Eastland at 63.5. West Carroll was fifth (49), and AFC was seventh (30).
The Cavanaugh brothers took the top two places in the high jump. Brian Cavanaugh won by clearing 6-1; Brad was second at 6-0. The brothers then teamed with Max Barkalow and Brooks Grobe to win the 800 relay in 1:36.76.
Brad Cavanaugh, Grobe, Barkalow and Kevin Cheeseman teamed up to win the 400 relay 46.05. Grobe also won the 100 in 11.99 seconds. Juan Dominguez won the discus (117-11˝).
Regan Todhunter and Nolan McGinn were key scorers for the Comets. Todhunter won both the 110 hurdles (16.76) and the 300 hurdles (43.07). McGinn won the triple jump (41-1˝) and the 400 (54.88). Bryson Reyes won the 1,600 (4:53.35).
The Comets also won the 3,200 relay (8:40.54) and the 1,600 relay (3:523.28).
Millegeville-Eastland was led by Cooper Pauley, who won the 3,200 in 10:48.25. AFC’s Riley Stephens won the long jump in 19-1.
Sterling 7th in Rockton: The Golden Warriors totaled 37 points, earning seventh place in the 12-team field at the Northern Illinois Invitational held at Hononegah High School in Rockton. Sycamore won the invite with 101 points, while Hononegah (93) and Harlem (73) rounded out the top 3.
Freshman Jonathan Landis earned the lone win for Sterling when he won the 3,200-meter run in 9:54.92, finishing nearly 3 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.
The Golden Warriors had two other top-3 finishes. Senior Jacob Kirchhoff earned second place in the high jump with a height of 5 feet, 11 inches. He was just one inch off Sycamore’s Logan Wright (6-0).
Sterling’s 3,200 relay team of Logan Cheshire, Cody Hansen, Cody Lund and Ethan Rocha placed third in the race, crossing in 8:28.00 behind United Township (8:09.34) and Crystal Lake South (8:25.83).
