CHAMPAIGN (AP) — Some Illinois colleges are asking students to, please, avoid the temptation to take a selfie on graduation day.

But that feeling isn't universal.

Parkland College spokeswoman Patty Lehn tells The News-Gazette in Champaign ( ) that graduation is a celebration. So the Champaign community college will have mascot Coby the Cobra mingling with the crowd so grads can take a selfie with the giant green snake.

Eastern Illinois University in Charleston is among schools asking its students to leave their phones at home. Spokeswoman Vicki Shaw-Woodard says EIU wants students to be considerate of all those who are graduating and refrain from taking photos of themselves on stage.

The University of Illinois has no policy on selfies. But the campus-wide ceremony is so large that graduates don't cross the stage, anyway.
