Morrison names latest Hall class
The latest Morrison High School Hall of Fame class was finalized at a meeting on April 16.
Individuals to be recognized are Harry Geiger, Jeff Jenkins, Brad Tegeler, Jason Smith, Becky Nugent and Amanda Smiley Smith. Kevin Blean will be inducted as a friend of MHS athletics. The 2009 state championship football team will also be honored.
The induction ceremony will take place on Friday, Sept. 19, when Morrison hosts Newman in football.
Illini in the running for Brunson
Stevenson junior Jalen Brunson on Saturday announced via Twitter he has narrowed his college choices to eight.
Among those on the list are Illinois, Kansas, defending champion UConn, and Temple – his father, former Bull Rick Brunson’s alma mater.
Michigan, Michigan State, Purdue and Villanova also are in the running to land the two-time first-team All-State selection who averaged 26.1 points, 5.4 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 2.9 steals per game while leading the Patriots to third place in the Class 4A boys basketball tournament in March.
Eagles sign Army Ranger
Defensive end Alejandro Villanueva, a first lieutenant U.S. Army Ranger, signed a rookie free-agent contract with the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday.
Villanueva, 25, spent the last 4 years as an active member of the Army. He served three tours in Afghanistan.
Suh not on the trading block
Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew said Monday the team has no interest in trading defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh.
There were recent reports that the team was interested in dealing away Suh because of his $22.4 million salary cap number. He is entering the final season of his rookie contract.
Carter-Williams named top rookie
Philadelphia 76ers point guard Michael Carter-Williams is this year’s NBA Rookie of the Year.
Carter-Williams, the 11th overall pick of last year’s draft out of Syracuse, averaged 16.7 points, 6.3 assists and 6.2 rebounds. He joined Oscar Robertson (1960-61) and Alvin Adams (1975-76) as the only players since 1950-51 to lead all rookies in those categories.
