DIXON – James R. Collins D.V.M., 78, of Dixon, died Friday, May 2, 2014, at Pinecrest Community in Mount Morris.

He co-owned and operated the Dixon Veterinary Clinic in Dixon for 38 years prior to his retirement.

James was born April 21, 1936, in Osceola, Neb., the son of Clay Robert and Ruth Helen (Dunn) Collins. He married Ellabeth Shaw on Aug. 3, 1957, in Dixon.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Dixon and served on various committees. He served on the boards of Dixon National Bank/Amcore Bank and Dixon Home Savings Banks, was chairman of the Dixon Memorial Arch Committee, was president of the American Embryo Transfer Association, and president of the Mississippi Valley Medical Association. His memberships include K.S.B. Foundation, the Illinois Valley Medical Association, the Illinois State Veterinary Medical Association, the Masonic Temple in Dixon, Gyros Club and he was a past member of the Dixon Rotary Association.

He also was a captain in the U.S. Army Veterinary Corp.

Survivors include his wife of Dixon; one son, Doug (Annie) Collins of Byron; two daughters, Janet (Michael) Stichter of Dixon, and Sarah (Jason) Kelly of Arvada, Colo.; one brother, Richard (Cathie) Collins of Dixon; seven grandchildren, Douglas (Elyse) Stichter of Chicago, Robert Stichter of Dixon; Carly, Laurel, and Laney Kelly of Arvada, and Dylan and Ellie Kate Collins of Byron; and one great-granddaughter, Lillie Stichter.

He was preceded in death by his parents and infant daughter, Ann.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Preston-Schilling Funeral Home in Dixon. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church in Dixon, with the Rev. Mike Jones, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at Grand Detour Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to Iowa State University School of Veterinary Medicine and First United Methodist Church in Dixon.
