Pablo Del Monte won’t run in Derby

Pablo Del Monte will not run in the Kentucky Derby, his trainer said Friday morning, leaving the field for Saturday’s race at 19.

As an also-eligible entrant, he could have taken the spot vacated by Hopperunity, who was scratched Thursday morning because of a bruised left front foot. But Pablo Del Monte’s connections instead opted to stick with their plan of pointing the colt toward the May 17 Preakness.

Cabrera, Flores tied at Wells Fargo

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Angel Cabrera hit a pair of superb short-game shots for a 3-under 69 that gave him a share of the lead with Martin Flores on Friday in the Wells Fargo Championship.

Cabrera loves Quail Hollow because he hits driver on just about every hole. But it was a pitch-and-run on the par-5 seventh hole, and perfectly judged flop shot out of the rough on the next hole that enabled him to share the lead.

Flores played in the morning and had a 68.

Braves extend
Johnson 3-years

The Atlanta Braves and third baseman Chris Johnson have agreed to a $23.5 million, 3-year contract covering 2015-17.

A supposed throw-in to the Justin Upton trade, Johnson ranked second in the NL with a .321 average. He had 12 homers and 68 RBIs.

Tigers sign
closer Hanrahan

Former All-Star Joel Hanrahan agreed to a $1 million, 1-year deal with the Detroit Tigers, who are hopeful the right-hander can bolster a shaky bullpen when he’s ready to pitch again in the majors.

Hanrahan had Tommy John surgery last May after nine appearances for the Red Sox in 2013.

He saved 76 games over the previous two seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Bruins owner
condemns comments

The Boston Bruins and Mayor Marty Walsh condemned racist slurs about P.K. Subban that hit social media after the Montreal defenseman scored in the second overtime of their playoff game Thursday.

Bruins President Cam Neely issued a statement Friday calling the tweets “racist” and “classless.” He said they came from an “ignorant group of individuals” who do not reflect the organization.
