ALAMOGORDO, N.M. – Doris Helms of Alamogordo, formerly of Sterling, died Wednesday, April 23, 2014. 

She was born in 1921 in Arcadia, Wis., the daughter of Ed and May Abts. She served in the Women’s Auxiliary Corps during World War II. She married Arlo Helms in February 1945. He preceded her in death.

Survivors inclue her six children, James (Rita) Helms, Paula Byrd, Tim Helms, Leon Helms, Marilyn Heide, and Kendal (Penny) Helms; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Victor and David Abts; and sister, Phyllis Hammer.

At her request, there will be no services.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Father James B. Hay School, 1000 E. Eighth St., Alamogordo, NM 88310.
