STERLING – A homeowner woke up to noise early this morning and interrupted a burglary in progress, police said.

It happened about 3 a.m. in the 1100 block of East 16th Street, near Jefferson Elementary School. According to police, the burglar struck the homeowner in the face and then fled. The homeowner suffered minor injuries, but declined medical treatment when police arrived.

The suspect took off with at least one item, but police wouldn't say what it was. The suspect didn't wield a weapon, detective Mike Henry said.

"There hasn't been a problem with burglaries in that neighborhood," he said. "I don't know why it was that house or that block. It's a pretty low-key neighborhood."

Anyone with information on the burglar's identity or whereabouts is urged call the Police Department at 815-625-7867 or send information to the police at tipline@sterling-il.gov. The city of Sterling is also on Facebook.
