Guest conductor to take part at Wednesday concert

STERLING – The Sterling Municipal Band’s annual free spring concert will be Wednesday at Centennial Auditorium in Sterling High School, 1608 Fourth Ave.

Christ Lutheran School will serve food at 6 p.m. in the high school commons for $8 a plate. The menu will include ribs, baked beans, potato salad, a cornbread muffin, lemonade, iced tea, and water. Cobbler will be served during intermission.

The concert will begin at 7 p.m.. A portion of the music will be in collaboration with Sterling Public Library’s Community Read Month of “True Grit.” The first half of the concert will feature music scores from Western movies, such as “The Magnificent Seven” and “The Cowboys.” A movement from “Rodeo” will be adapted to pay tribute to “True Grit” and John Wayne.

John Stanley Ross, director of bands and an associate professor of music at Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C., will be guest conductor. His portion of the concert will have a selection written in his honor, “West Side Story,” and others. Visit music.appstate.edu/faculty-staff/dr-john-ross for more information about Ross.
