Dollmeyer commits to Sauk Valley

Polo High School senior AJ Dollmeyer signed a national letter of intent on Wednesday to play basketball at Sauk Valley Community College next season.

The 6-foot-8 Dollmeyer averaged 17.4 points and 9.9 rebounds per game in helping the Marcos post a 23-7 record this past season. He earned first-team all-conference and all-area honors.

“We think the big fella has got a lot of potential,” SVCC coach Russ Damhoff said.

Dollmeyer and Newman point guard A.J. Sharp both signed with the Skyhawks on Wednesday.

Bears add depth at running back

The Bears on Wednesday signed free-agent running back Shaun Draughn to a one-year contract, the team said.

He joins Michael Ford as the only tailbacks on the roster behind Pro Bowler Matt Forte.

Draughn has averaged 3.7 yards on 63 carries in 20 career games, 17 of which were with the Kansas City Chiefs.

He has two career touchdowns.

The pair married in January 2012 after he finished his college career at Wisconsin and before he was drafted by the Seahawks. The couple had been visible at Seahawks events for his first two seasons in the league.

Vogel may be on
hot seat

The Indiana Pacers’ Frank Vogel is “coaching for his job” and a strong playoff showing is essential despite a 56-win season that earned the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference, sources said.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

Northwestern vote coming on Friday

Northwestern University football players are scheduled to vote Friday morning on whether they want to be represented by a union.
Northwestern, which is a private university, is not allowing reporters on campus at Welsh-Ryan Arena, where the vote will take place, citing the players’ wishes to avoid media attention.

Peter Sung Ohr, regional director of the National Labor Relations Board, ruled in February that Northwestern’s football players on athletic scholarships are university employees, setting the stage for the election.
