Obituaries

Valeria G. Reed

STERLING – Valeria G. Reed, 102, of Sterling, passed away Monday, April 21, 2014, at CGH Medical Center in Sterling.

She was born May 27, 1911, in Freeport, the daughter of Frank and Edith (Foust) Michel. The family moved to Sterling in 1923. She married Donald Reed on Oct. 24, 1934. He died June 16, 2000. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Sterling. She was active in the PTA for many years, serving in several positions. She also volunteered in the Girl Scout Program for 35 years, having worked on several committees. She helped organize the new Green Hills Girl Scout Council, having served as its first president for 7 years. She enjoyed traveling extensively in the U.S. and abroad. She was a committed mother, caregiver and homemaker. 

Survivors include her son, Herbert (Joanne) Reed, and her daughter, Barbara Peugh, both of Sterling; four grandchildren, Gary (Lora) Peugh of Rock Falls, Craig (Kathy) Peugh of Hamilton, Mich., Michael (Cyndi) Reed of Allengan, Mich., and Julie (Sam) Jaberi of Foxboro, Mass.; five great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandsons; five great-great-grandchildren; and one great-great-great-grandchild. 

She was preceded in death by her two brothers, Shirl and Leonard Michel; a sister, Bernice Fester; a son-in-law, Charles Peugh; and a great-grandson, Jason Peugh.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at McDonald Funeral Home, 1002 12th Ave., Rock Falls. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Mark Oehlert officiating. Burial will be at Oak Knoll Memorial Park in Sterling.

Memorials may be made to St. John Lutheran Church or the United Way.
