CHICAGO (AP) – Authorities say the bodies of a Cook County Department of Corrections officer and his Chicago police officer wife have been found at a Chicago house.

Cook County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Cara Smith says the bodies were found about 5 a.m. Sunday. Both had been fatally shot and authorities are investigating the deaths as an apparent murder suicide.

The Cook County officer was identified as Javier Acevedo. He had been with the department for about 25 years.

Authorities believe Acevedo shot his wife, identified by police as Veronica Rizzo-Acevedo, and then turned the gun on himself.

A Chicago police spokesman says Rizzo-Acevedo was an 18-year veteran of the police department.

Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy calls the death an “awful tragedy” in an emailed statement.

Rock Falls is considering a ban on leaf burning. Should the city finally take that step?
Yes. Sterling and Dixon have had bans for years. It’s time for Rock Falls to impose a ban.
No. It would be too great a burden for homeowners to dispose of fallen leaves in other ways.
