Golden Warriors’ soccer defender also loves to write, play tennis

How long have you played soccer?

I played travel soccer when I was younger, and I played club this past fall, but I moved here in fifth grade and stopped playing until high school.

Where did you move from?

I moved to Sterling form Lombard after my mom got remarried. It’s all right here. I played some club tennis at Westwood in my spare time, and even a little soccer at the YMCA in Sterling.

What do you personally take away from playing sports?

I really like being involved. Being in sports, you are closer with your teammates than, say, clubs. I’ve done both, and you spend way much more time together, both on and off the field, on a sports team. Especially with this soccer team, we are such a close family. Even compared with last year, I feel like we have gotten stronger and stronger, and it helps us out on the field a lot.

Have you ever traveled
anywhere interesting?

I’ve been to Thailand. My dad lives there now. He used to travel there for work a lot, and just ended up moving there. I went to Phuket in Thailand; it’s so pretty there. It’s the clearest water you’ve ever seen. This fish swim right up to you and you don’t even need goggles to see them, it’s so pretty.

What would be your
dream job?

I really want to be an ophthalmologist – an eye surgeon. I also really like writing, so I’m thinking of majoring in biology and minoring in journalism, They’re two really different things, but that’s OK.

Why study the eye?
What fascinates you about it?

I guess just the fact that it’s all seeing is really cool. It’s your window. I’ll look up facts about the eye just for fun, and I don’t do that for anything else that’s academic.

When did you become
interested in the eye?

I don’t really know, but probably when I had to get glasses when I was younger. I remember putting them on for the first time and being able to see everything so clearly, it just was amazing to me.

Favorite food?

Chili. Oh my gosh, my mom makes it all the time for me. When I come home from soccer practice, there is usually a pot sitting on the stove. I always look at it and hope that’s it chili. When I open up the lid, I get excited, and about half the time it’s chili. It’s my favorite.

Favorite music?

I guess pop. Whatever is on the radio, usually, but sometimes that gets annoying. I like rap, some country, but no heavy metal.

What song is on your music player that might surprise your friends?

I have a Slipknot song. I think it’s called Psychosocial. It’s an extreme head-banging song. I don’t really listen to it very much, though.
