STERLING – A Sterling firefighter who is charged with sexual abuse has resigned.

Philip D. Johannsen, 37, resigned – effective immediately – on Tuesday, Sterling City Manager Scott Shumard announced Friday.

Johannsen was hired in July 2005.

The fire department now has two firefighter jobs open. Applications for the positions were due April 11, and a physical fitness test will begin at 9 a.m. today.

Johannsen is accused of fondling and kissing a girl under the age of 18 in early April.

He pleaded not guilty on Wednesday, a week after his arrest, and is in Whiteside County Jail on a $300,000 bond.
