NW Illinois HOF to meet April 30

The Northwest Illinois Sports Hall of Fame Committee will meeting Wednesday, April 30 at Storybrook Country Club near Hanover.

The event will start with an “Attitude Adjustment” at 6 p.m., with a fish dinner served at 6:45, and the meeting to follow. Members are asked to RSVP by April 28, by calling Brian Reusch’s voicemail at 877-408-4716 or emailing brian@wcciradio.com.


Warriors hand out postseason awards

The Sterling High School wrestling team held its annual awards banquet on March 27, and handed out seven awards and seven college scholarships to graduating seniors.

Bryant Lilly was named Most Valuable Wrestler and won the Art Kraft Most Falls award, as well as receiving three $1,000 scholarships. Zack Depuy won the Carson DeJarnatt Takedown award, and also received three $1,000 scholarships.

Will Canales won the Hustle award, and earned a $1,000 scholarship. Nick Terronez won Most Improved, Jaden Urrutia was named Oustanding Wrestler, and Tanner Massey and Cariel Beasley won the Coaches award.


Player dies from line drive to head

A middle school baseball player from Wilmington, N.C. has died after being hit by a line drive during practice.

New Hanover County school officials say that Alex Newsome, an 11-year-old pitcher, was throwing batting practice Friday afternoon at Roland-Grise Middle School when he was hit in the head.

Coaches performed CPR on the youth until emergency crews arrived, but he died a few hours later at an area hospital.


Gordon, Grant go pro; Harrell stays in school

SI.com reported Monday that Syracuse sophomore forward Jerami Grant and Arizona freshman forward Aaron Gordon are expected to declare for the NBA Draft.

Louisville sophomore forward Montrezl Harrell will return to the Cardinals for his junior year.

Gordon’s teammate Nick Johnson, a junior guard, is also likely to forgo his final year of eligibility in Tucson.
