ROCK FALLS – Rita J. Rosengren, 82, of Rock Falls, died Saturday, April 12, 2014, at Avonlea Cottage in Sterling.

She was born March 24, 1932, in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., the daughter of Bernard Joseph and Anna (Tokar) Whalen. She graduated from Poughkeepsie High School in 1949. In high school, she was active in sports an was a Junior Red Cross representative.

While serving 2 years in the Army, she met Elwin L. Rosengren while stationed in Fort Lawton in Seattle, Wash. They married Oct. 10, 1953, at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Rock Falls.

Rita’s children and grandchildren were the center of her life. She enjoyed baking, especially homemade pies and breads. She loved to read and tend to her sedum and flower gardens.

She is survived by her husband; children John (Judy) Rosengren of Sterling, Dave (Dinah) Rosengren of Deer Grove, Sandra (Jim) Cesarek of Rock Falls, Ann (Ki) Wagenecht of Prophetstown, Theresa (Joe) Behrens of Rock Falls, Gene (Sherry) Rosengren of Rock Falls, Tom Rosengren of Sterling, Paul Rosengren of Rock Falls, Mary (Jim) Kinney of Rock Falls, Regina (Ted) Nehkorn of Peoria, and Joan Rosengren of Sterling; 26 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; her cousin, Dorothy “Dolly” Ellsworth of Poughkeepsie; and a special friend of the family, Greg Sippel of Sterling.

Rita was preceded in death by her parents.

Private services will be held. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Sterling.
