Laurel O. Rasmussen

STERLING – Laurel O. Rasmussen, 95, of Sterling, died Friday, April 11, 2014, at her home at Good Neighbor Care in Sterling.

She was born June 30, 1918, in Prophetstown, the daughter of Raymond and Mary Irene (Olmstead) Matthews. She married Howard C. Rasmussen on Aug. 16, 1940, at Little Brown Church in the Vale in Nashua, Iowa. He died Aug. 16, 2012. She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Sterling. Laurel found great joy in her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her daughter, Karen (Richard) Palmer of Sterling; her sons, Gary (Joyce) Rasmussen of Homosassa, Fla., and Stanley (Nancy) Rasmussen of Rock Falls; eight grandchildren, Adam (Patti) Palmer, Rachel (Matt) Bollinger, Ryan (Kara) Palmer, Troy (Mary) Rasmussen, Tiffani (Jeff) Behrens, Tonya (Shawn) Stallion, Anne (Greg) Wurth, and David Rasmussen; and 15 great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by one sister, Dorothy Irene Wetzel.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday and the funeral at 11 a.m. Monday at Wesley United Methodist Church in Sterling, with the Rev. Nancy Winegartner officiating. Burial will be at Tampico Memorial Cemetery. McDonald Funeral Homes is handling arrangements.
