UIC faculty OKs second strike

CHICAGO (AP) – The faculty union at the University of Illinois-Chicago says its members have voted to go ahead with a second strike, if negotiations with the university fail to yield an agreement.

The University of Illinois at Chicago United Faculty said in a news release that its members voted Wednesday night to authorize a strike on April 23. The union staged a 2-day strike in February.

The union and the university are negotiating over issues such as salaries and career opportunities for full-time faculty who lack tenure.

The university’s administration says it can’t agree to any long-term increases in expenses because of the state’s financial struggles.

The two sides are expected to continue negotiations next week.
