Ex-Illinois department aide pleads guilty to fraud

SPRINGFIELD (AP) — A former chief of staff for the Illinois Department of Public Health has pleaded guilty in connection with a $13 million bribery and kickback case.

Prosecutors say 45-year-old Quinshaunta R. Golden of Homewood pleaded guilty to bribery, obstruction of justice and taking kickbacks on Thursday in Springfield federal court. Prosecutors accused Golden of accepting kickback money for steering about $13 million in grant and contract funds to purported philanthropic groups.

The accusations stem in part from Golden's time as chief of staff to then-agency head Eric E. Whitaker. Whitaker has not been accused of wrongdoing. Golden worked at the department from 2003 until early 2008.

Golden is to be sentenced Aug. 18.
