COTTONWOOD, Ariz. – Eldo “Gene” Sutter, 86, of Cottonwood, Ariz., passed away Monday, March 17, 2014, at his home.

He was born Oct. 19, 1927, in Hopedale, to Lawrence and Sarah May Sutter.

Through the years, Gene worked at various jobs in Michigan, starting with the family farm and General Motors. Some of his fondest memories were from his time working at Wyckoff Hybrid Seed Corn Co. in Valparaiso, Ind. Gene worked most of his life as a journeyman carpenter. He also worked on the construction of Sterling High School, and built numerous homes in the Sterling area. He was a business owner and was a dealer for Vacu-Maid Central Cleaning Systems (Vacu-Maid of Sterling). Gene was a member of Science Ridge Mennonite Church in Sterling. Upon moving in 1985 to Cottonwood, he became a member of Vineyard Christian Fellowship Church of Cottonwood, where he served as a board member. Even in retirement, Gene enjoyed working with wood, building furniture, caning chairs, and collecting and restoring antiques.

Gene was a man of deep faith, who was devoted to his wife, Betty, his family, and the church. He will be missed by them and the friends he made wherever he went.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Betty Sutter; son, the Rev. Randall “Randy” (Alice) Sutter of Clarkdale, Ariz.; daughters, Peggy Puckett of Phoenix, Bonnie (Dale) Book of Colorado, Susan Mackey of Texas, Holly Sutter of Cottonwood, and Kelly (Keith) Waugh of Illinois; sisters-in-law, Joan Muhling of Indiana, Ruby Sutter of Florida, and Donna Sutter of Indiana; brother-in-law, Alvin Kurtz of Florida; 25 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Sarah; brother, Ivis Sutter; sister and brother-in-law, Odela and Ray Shank; brother and sister-in-law, Mervin and Dora Sutter; sister, Hilda Kurtz; and brother, Omar Sutter.

A celebration of Gene’s life was March 22, officiated by his son, the Rev. Randy Sutter, at Vineyard Christian Fellowship Church of Cottonwood.
