May 1 is the National Day of Prayer. Locally, we will celebrate NDP, "Mayor's Prayer Breakfast," at 7 a.m. at the Sterling YMCA, 2505 YMCA Way.

Mayor Bill Wescott of Rock Falls and Mayor Skip Lee of Sterling will update the faith community on the current networking between the two cities. Breakfast will be provided by Creative Cuisine and served by Kiwanis members. It will include egg casserole, pastries, fruit, orange juice, and coffee for $7.

Every year there is a theme, and this year's theme is "One Voice, United in Prayer," based on Romans 15:6. Does prayer work? Is there truly someone listening who can do anything about the current state of affairs in our homes, workplaces, communities, or even our nation?

Jennifer Kennedy Dean said, "Prayer is an interchange of love between the Father and his child. That desire you feel free to pray is his love drawing you to delight in him. You only need to respond."

For Christians, prayer is "communion with God." It is the medium of divine revelation. Through prayer, we actually experience relationship with God. The quality of our prayer life then determines the quality of our relationship with God.

it is our initiative to meet God, whether we are asking for favors, singing in celebration, or crying out in distress. Our goal is to know God better, to experience the fullness of a relationship with him. Through prayer, we honor him. We give something back to the Almighty, something he desires greatly.

The local National Day of Prayer is sponsored by the Sterling Kiwanis Club and the Community Clergy Association. Several clergy members will participate in "The Seasons of Prayer."

Tickets are available at the YMCA at 815-535-9622; The Big Red Church, 312 Second Ave., Sterling, 815-625-5112; and the First Congregational Church of Rock Falls, 905 Dixon Ave., 815-625-3314.
