Eastland softball rolls to lopsided win on road

Trevor Jones and Marshall Benters combined on a five-hitter, leading the West Carroll Thunder to a 3-1 victory over River Ridge on Thursday afternoon in Thomson.

Jones (1-1) struck out nine and walked five in 4 1/3 innings, allowing two hits. Benters struck out six without a walk over the final 2 2/3 innings.

Jones also went 2-for-2 at the plate, and Matt Dyson was 3-for-4 for the Thunder (4-5, 1-3 NUIC West).

Galena 7, Eastland 5: The Cougars couldn't overcome a 5-0 deficit after the first inning in an NUIC West loss on the road.

Jacob Reuscher had two hits and an RBI for Eastland, while Devin Hartman drove in two runs. Austin Weaver added an RBI, and Ramsay Truckenmiller took the loss on the mound.

Softball

West Carroll 13, Scales Mound-River Ridge 6:
Abby Maike went 5-for-5, Brianna Kampmeier blasted a three-run home run, and the Thunder put away a close NUIC battle with a seven-run sixth inning in Thomson.

Maike had a solo homer and two RBIs, while Cassidy Rice and Rachel Dykstra each drove in a pair of runs for West Carroll (3-5, 2-1). Rice went the distance in the circle to move to 3-2 on the year.

Kelley Koester led SMRR (0-4, 0-2) with three hits and three RBIs.

Eastland 30, Galena 0, 5 inn.: Bubby Doubler and Makenzie Fink combined on a no-hitter as the Cougars rolled to an NUIC rout on the road.

Seven different players had at least two hits for Eastland (2-1, 2-0), which rapped out 19 as a team and exploded for a 15-run second inning.

Paige Gallentine had four hits and four RBIs, Sammy Sohl and Drew Preston also drove in four runs each, and Preston and Tina Patzner had three hits apiece.

College tennis

DuPage 6, Sauk Valley 3:
Jonathan Downing earned the Skyhawks' lone win in a competed match, pulling off a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 5 singles in a meet moved indoors to Westwood Sports Complex in Sterling.

Victor Renteria earned a forfeit at No. 6 singles, then he and Troy Miller won by forfeit at No. 2 doubles for Sauk (0-3).
