McDermott, Marshall receive honors

Creighton senior Doug McDermott and Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall were recognized Thursday as the nation’s best player and coach by the Associated Press.

McDermott, a three-time All-American, won the AP player of the year award after leading the nation in scoring with 26.7 points per game. He scored 3,150 career points to rank fifth on the NCAA’s all-time scoring list.

Marshall led the Shockers to an undefeated regular season, with the prestige of being the first NCAA men’s team to go 35-0.

McAdoo to enter NBA draft

North Carolina forward James Michael McAdoo announced Thursday that he will forgo his final season of eligibility and declare for the 2014 NBA draft.

McAdoo averaged 14.3 points and 7.0 rebounds over his sophomore and junior seasons with the Tar Heels.


Murphy ripped for taking leave

Radio host Mike Francesa is mad at New York Mets second baseman Daniel Murphy. Why? Because Murphy has taken 3 days off to be with his wife during and after the birth of their first child.

In Major League Baseball, a player is allowed to miss 3 days for paternity leave. Francesa, who has three kids of his own, blasted Murphy on his New York radio show.


Conte out 4-5 months after surgery

Bears safety Chris Conte had shoulder surgery in late March, and his recovery could affect his availability for the start of training camp.

The Bears have signed four free-agent safeties since March 11 in an attempt to intensify competition for playing time – Ryan Mundy, M.D. Jennings and reputed special teamers Danny McCray and Craig Steltz. Steltz was behind Conte on the depth chart last season.

Sanders thinks Manziel is No. 1 pick

NFL Network analyst Deion Sanders said the Houston Texans should use the first overall pick in the 2014 draft on Johnny Manziel, and believes there’s a reason for the negative perceptions about the former Texas A&M quarterback.

“Oh, please. I love Johnny Football,” Sanders said. “See, the reason people won’t accept Johnny Football is because Johnny Football has ghetto tendencies. I love Johnny Football.”

Former Lion Burleson visits Dolphins

Nate Burleson, the free agent wide receiver from Detroit, visited the Dolphins on Thursday.

Burleson, a 12-year veteran, had 39 receptions for 461 yards and one touchdown in an injury-shortened 2013 season. For his career Burleson has 457 receptions for 5,630 yards and 39 touchdowns.
