URBANA (AP) — Every Champaign County Democratic ballot that was cast in last week's election is being recounted because of potential problems with tabulations for some unopposed candidates.
The (Champaign) News-Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/1dN4xuj ) the recount began Tuesday afternoon. About 8,500 Democratic ballots were cast during the March 18 primary.
The recount was ordered because of errors tabulating votes for some unopposed district committeemen and precinct committeemen races.
The newspaper says Champaign County Clerk Gordy Hulten acknowledged errors in the count, which he blamed on a "ballot design issue" thanks to additional white space that prompted voting machines to misread certain races.
He says he hopes the recount can be finished by Wednesday afternoon.
