Sports briefs for March 22.

Rehmert fourth at 3-point contest

Sterling senior Zach Rehmert finished fourth in the Class 3A Three-Point Showdown on Thursday, an event held in conjunction with the 3A/4A boys state basketball tournament at Carver Arena in Peoria.

Rehmert converted 10 of 15 baskets in the preliminary round, then seven more in a shootoff, to earn a spot in the finals. There, he made nine more, behind winner Quinton Moore of Rich East (11) and runners-up Justin Shadowens of Marion (10) and David Perkins of East Peoria (10).

The fifth finalist, Austin Patterson of Morris, made seven baskets.

Three locals earn NIB-12 honors

Dixon’s Cal Jarrett and Laron Carr, and Sterling’s Zach Rehmert were each unanimous selections to the Northern Illinois Big 12 West all-conference team, it was announced on Thursday.

A complete list of the team can be found on B10.

Roth fares well in NCAA tournament

Dixon native Joe Roth had a busy and successful day at the NCAA Division I wrestling tournament in Oklahoma City, and guaranteed himself a medal.

After splitting a pair of bouts on Thursday, the Central Michigan University senior won three of four in the wrestleback bracket on Friday, guaranteeing himself a spot on the podium. He will go for seventh place on Saturday against Oklahoma’s Cody Brewer.

The top eight finishers in each weight class earn medals.

Wootton signs deal with Vikings

Defensive end Corey Wootton has signed a one-year deal with the Minnesota Vikings, according to his agent.

Wootton, who entered the league in 2010 as a fourth-round pick, played 45 games over his 4 seasons with the Bears and made 22 starts. He delivered a 7-sack season in 2012, emerging as a legitimate pass rush threat off the edge.

But last season, with the Bears’ defense decimated by injuries, Wootton slid inside frequently to play defensive tackle and his statistical production was ordinary at best. In 15 starts, Wootton recorded 31 tackles with 3 ½ sacks and an additional 4 ½ tackles for loss.
