VALLEY CITY (AP) – A fire in western Illinois has destroyed a landmark in the small village of Valley City.

The Quincy Herald-Whig reports that the former Tate Cheese plant was a total loss in the Thursday night blaze. Firefighters from four counties battled the blaze. Griggsville Fire Chief Larry Bradshaw says the loss is “quite a change to the landscape.”

Authorities haven’t determined a cause of the fire.

The building had been vacant for several years, and crews had been doing salvage work on the site.

The plant was shut down in 1999 after the business was sold, putting 75 people out of work.

Valley City is in Pike County about 65 miles west of Springfield.
