CHICAGO (AP) – A Chicago man is facing an attempted murder charge after authorities say he fired a gun that injured a police officer when a bullet ricocheted off a piece of wood.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports 53-year-old James Garland is also charged with aggravated battery with a firearm.

The 34-year-old veteran officer was wounded Sunday while trying to execute a search warrant on the city’s South Side. He was hit between the eyes and eventually released from the hospital.

Garland is set to appear in bond court on Wednesday. It wasn’t clear if he had an attorney.
