CHICAGO (AP) — Republican candidate for U.S. Senate Jim Oberweis is taking heat for spending the final week before Tuesday's primary in Florida.
The Sugar Grove dairy magnate faces Downers Grove businessman Doug Truax in the race to take on U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin.
WMAQ-TV first reported that Oberweis left Illinois Saturday and will be at the condo he owns in Florida until Friday.
In a statement, Oberweis says he made the trip to fulfill a promise to his wife for her birthday and to raise money for his U.S. Senate race. He says it's "no secret" he'll need to travel frequently to raise money to compete with Durbin.
Truax says Oberweis' actions show he's unelectable. The West Point graduate says "we need a warrior to take on Durbin, not a timid snowbird."
