People ask why Republicans and Democrats can't seem to work together. Sheriff John Varga has not only Republicans, but lifelong Democrats supporting him in his bid for re-election.
County Board Chairman Rick Ketchum, Democrat, and I (county board vice chairman, Republican) both support him, as do many current and past county board members of both parties. Why? They have worked with him, and they know not only what kind of sheriff he has been, but what kind of man he is.
People will say he is uncooperative and divisive. Is that true, or because he won't play the game? I worked with him on the complete renovation of the sheriff's department building. Through cooperative efforts, we saved the taxpayers more than $100,000, and worked together to get video arraignments of prisoners, which improved safety and saved money.
I came at things from a county board perspective; Sheriff Varga looked at things from the perspective of law enforcement. But we listened to each other and got the job done – what was best for the people of Lee County.
Don't be swayed by half-truths and innuendo. This is an extremely important primary election. Please vote for Sheriff John Varga on March 18.
