Re-elect Varga for Lee sheriff

I write this letter to ask Lee County voters to vote for John Varga for Lee County sheriff. John is our current sheriff and has done an outstanding job.

His opponent, John Simonton, is a retired state trooper who receives an annual pension of more than $111,000 a year. He stated to the local newspaper if he's elected, he will not take his county pension, and it could be used for departmental training. Fact is, if he doesn't pay into this pension plan, the money goes back to the county board, and they decide where the money is spent.

There's been a lot of discussion and an editorial in the local paper about retirees leaving service and continuing to work at very large salaries. We need to decide whether we think this should be allowed.

The unemployment rate is high, and I feel it's very "greedy" for this individual, who is retired with a six-figure annual income, to ask voters to elect him so he can make an additional $71,000 a year as sheriff.

Vote for John Varga. He's done a great job, and I'm confident he'll continue to serve the citizens of Lee County with fairness and integrity.
