Saddened by headline for fatality story

Published: Saturday, March 8, 2014 1:15 a.m. CST

I was greatly saddened by your headline in Monday’s paper [March 3] and truly disappointed for allowing that headline to be published.

The families, friends, schools and community know that this unintentional, life-changing, horrific accident was just that. The pain for both of the families of these two close friends is unimaginable.

It was unnecessary to sensationalize your headline. It is my hope that in the future, SVM will use, quote, greater compassion and common sense to promote the sale of its papers, unquote.

Note to readers: Margo Jakobs is the Rock Falls High School student assistance coordinator.

Additional note: A kicker headline above the story’s main headline referred to the shooting as accidental.

Rock Falls is considering a ban on leaf burning. Should the city finally take that step?
Yes. Sterling and Dixon have had bans for years. It’s time for Rock Falls to impose a ban.
No. It would be too great a burden for homeowners to dispose of fallen leaves in other ways.
