Climate change topic of DVD

Published: Saturday, March 8, 2014 1:15 a.m. CST

Many of us believe the weather has been changing. The Rock River Open Forum will show the highly acclaimed 75-minute DVD “Chasing Ice” at 6 p.m. Thursday in the Rock Falls Public Library. The public is invited; admission is free.

Highly praised National Geographic photographer James Balog and his collaborators used time-lapse photography to film melting glaciers over many months. It compresses years into seconds, and the changes are startling. The photographed glaciers are in Greenland, Alaska, Montana, and Canada.

After the film, a discussion will follow that hopefully results in some significant concrete actions.

Rock Falls is considering a ban on leaf burning. Should the city finally take that step?
Yes. Sterling and Dixon have had bans for years. It’s time for Rock Falls to impose a ban.
No. It would be too great a burden for homeowners to dispose of fallen leaves in other ways.
